Novedades sobre arte rupestre y poblamiento prehistórico en Castellón: una década de investigación

May 6, 2025 Inés Domingo (ICREA / University of Barcelona) The landscapes of Castellón conceal a unique, millennia-old art gallery with its hundreds of rock shelters containing Levantine rock art. Since the first discoveries in the iconic sites of Valltorta-Gasulla and Morella la Vella, dating back more than a century, the singularity and richness of these sites have attracted the attention of several generations of prehistorians interested in unraveling the mysteries of this art and its artists: Who were they? How did they live? What and how did they paint? The large number of researchers, surveys, and excavations that preceded us gave little indication that the rock shelters and walls along the river networks that crisscross this territory could still hold great discoveries of the quality and complexity of the earlier ones. However, the survey and excavation work that we have led in the last decade has yielded significant new findings, which we will present in this paper.
