Feeding of the 5,000
The feeding of the 5,000 is a miracle that is found in all 4 gospels. In fact, the feeding of the 5,000 is the only miracle recorded in all 4 gospels. And in this Year's cycle ("Year C") we are looking at Luke's version for the readings at Mass for the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, or more commonly known as Corpus Christi. What does the feeding of the 5,000 tell us about the miracle of the Eucharist, which is the mystery we are celebrating on this solemnity in the liturgical year? Listen to Dr. Pitre's explanation as he goes through how the description of this miracle echoes back to the manna in the desert during the Exodus, which is a foreshadow of the New Manna of the New Exodus as Jesus describes in John 6. Also, interestingly, Jesus makes it a point to have his apostles make the people sit down in groups of 50, which corresponds to the grouping you find in the 1st Exodus. So, Jesus is the new Moses; his apostles are the new hierarchy/the new 12 judges; and the people are the new Israel. The New Exodus is at hand.
