Saturday | May 23, 2025 | 2:30 PM | +21 °C Volozhyn is located 76 km from Minsk, on the Minsk-Grodno highway on the Volozhinka River. Population: 9,923 (as of January 1, 2025). First mentioned in 1400. For six centuries, the city was ruled by the Monwids, Gastolds, Radziwills, Czartoryskis, and Tyszkiewiczs. In 1793, after the second partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Volozhin became part of the Russian Empire. In 1803, Count Józef Tyszkiewicz purchased the town for 100,000 zlotys. A complex of Tyszkiewicz palace buildings with a park, a church with a bell tower, a synagogue, shopping arcades, and other buildings were built. In 1865, a fire destroyed more than 100 buildings in the town. On February 19, 1918, Volozhin was occupied by German troops. From 1920 to 1939, it was part of Poland. Since 1939, it has been part of the Byelorussian SSR. On June 25, 1941, it was occupied by German troops. It was liberated on July 5, 1944.
