For the narcissist, the idealized woman is his perfect extension; he loves her narcissistically, but hates her because she exists outside of him. This contradiction leads him to a compulsive need to merge with her, and at the same time, to an impulse to devalue her and take revenge when she refuses to be absorbed. When he talks about her, he uses absolute terms like "unique," "the only one," "perfect." There's an almost religious tone to the narrative of their often one-sided relationship. She's a central figure who embodies the narcissistic fantasy of grandeur, a redeeming and sacred figure. Only with her does he imagine extreme outcomes, eternal reunion or ultimate revenge. She must see him and acknowledge him, otherwise the narcissistic wound and the collapse of his grandiose image are devastating. She holds onto her self-esteem. The idealized woman is like a magic mirror: as long as it reflects a perfect image, she's precious; if the mirror cracks, she must be punished.
