Derby Then and now : River Street corner (Handysides complex) March 1960 to July 2026
In this Derby then and now I'm standing in Duke Street on the corner of River Street looking west up River Street. This area was once the site of The Britannia Iron Works (aka Britannia Foundry & Engineering works) where Andrew Handyside was the owner from 1847 to 1873 when it was taken over by Alexander Buchanan (Andrew's nephew). This is why there are two streets on this estate with those names. In the 2026 view pretty much everything has been demolished apart from the large building near the top of River Street That long brick building at the top of the hill is the back of the houses that run along North Parade, those houses are faced with white stone on North Parade, Until I made this then and now I hadn't realised they were red brick at the rear. The Britannia Foundry complex was demolished in 1936, in this 1960 view there are still railway tracks in place in that yard to the right, these were used by a travelling crane. To the right of this view (just out of shot) is the Furnace Inn pub The pub is in a house built in 1819, which was part of the Andrew Handyside Britannia Foundry complex (formerly Wetherhead & Glover), It was converted to a pub in 1895 and great to see it still going well, I've been to that pub a few times in recent years. Join my Facebook group dedicated to the work of Andrew Handyside : / andrewhandyside Photo A taken : March 1960 Photo B taken : 5th July 2026 Time elapsed : 66 Years Past & Present - in fading Photographs. High quality resolution fading photos showing local scenes as they were and how they are today from exactly the same view point. Then and now, Now and then, Past and Present, Old and New, Before and After. Call it what you want, just try one and see the effect! The presentations you can see here are the result of many hours of work put in by myself ensuring that the old and new photographs line up precisely, I don't publish any if I'm not 100% happy with the match. http://www.derbyphotos.co.uk/thenandnow/ Please note that the Then & now section on my website is currently in need of a revamp as they were all created back in 2005 using Flash and this is no longer supported so I will have to recreate all of my work again using a different method. In the meantime I'm publishing them on my YouTube channel like this one. Best viewed on a large computer screen or smart TV as this is recorded in 4K resolution with great music so a real waste watching it on a small phone screen. Did you know you can cast it to your smart tv from the YouTube app? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music Credits : 'The Restoration' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks Andy
