WALKS IN DORSET at PORTLAND (NORTH SECTION) AND THE HIGH ANGLE BATTERY & TOUT QUARRY SCULPTURE PARK
In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a 5 mile circular walk around the Northern part of the Isle of Portland. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan. I parked my car (for free) at the New Ground Car Park at the Northern end of the Island and started my walk in front of the iconic “Olympic Rings” that sit high up, overlooking Weymouth below. Initially I head East, past The Verne (a prison), to explore the remains of the High Angle Battery (built in 1892). Picking up the South West Coast Path, I head South past The Grove (another prison!) and enjoy some stunning views across the sea. On reaching Easton, I pass by the remains of Rufus Castle and drop down to the pretty Church Ope Cove. Climbing back up off the beach, I explore the ruins of St Andrew's Church before reaching high ground again by Pennsylvania Castle. I then crossed the island, Westwards, to pick up the South West Coast Path again at Weston. Following the SWCP, I now had great views of Chesil Beach to the North West. My final destination was the amazing Tout Quarry Sculpture Park which is the home to over 60 sculptures. Map courtesy of Google Maps. Aerial pictures courtesy of Google Maps.
