Forget the test pieces! How good is the xTool MetalFab for REAL steel parts?
What's better than a powerful handheld laser welder? That would be a CNC laser cutter of course! I didn't know what to expect going into this. After running all of the parts in the video and now quite a few more, I can say that the only problem I've experienced so far is that sometimes the nozzle will collide, it'll detect that collision and then stop the cut until that piece can be removed. This is where the support of the material can be too much, allowing more space below lets the parts fall where they may and stay out of the way. There is a bit of a learning curve to make sure the parts fall, but the great thing is that the program can be started right where it left off and finish the cut. I think with a machine like this, there is a lot more potential, I'd like to explore thick parts, but I'd also like to see if developing a setup to cut square and round tubing would also be possible. It seems like there is potential that an entry point could be added through the side panels to make this happen. It would turn the tubing in unison with the movement of the laser cutter head and voila! I'm sure there is a bit more to it than that, but it has the features, it's just a matter of adding two new panels and another axis. I also mentioned to xtool that it might be a good idea to offer an even smaller machine for both thinner materials and smaller as well, there are a lot of people who would love to use something like this just for thin parts. This machine that I tested being the 1200Watt is capable of cutting up to 1/2" thick steel, it will probably have a little bit of dross, it should produce clean cuts on 1/4" and 3/8" steel and I plan on checking that in the next video where we make a real product. #xtool #laser #lasercutting
