"I saw angels descend and take their souls." Father Nikolai recalled life in the camp and the test of his faith. Few survived the 1920s and 1930s. I felt God's strength, and I began to mentally say the Jesus Prayer. I also constantly kept in mind the joy of the Mother of God. At some point, I felt a warmth. Each of us tried to cuddle up to each other, but it was impossible! We all understood that sooner or later we would go to the Lord. Some recited the Psalter from memory, but we could no longer speak—the cold was fierce, our entire bodies were paralyzed—we couldn't even breathe. I watched as many sank under the water, their heads drooping. Then I heard only a sob, and their souls flew straight to the throne of the Lord God Himself—all martyrs. Not one had denied Him. I saw angels descending and taking their souls. And to me, a sinner, the Queen of Heaven herself appeared. She asked me not to abandon prayer—she said the Lord would heal me and leave me on earth—to strengthen Christ's Church. After this, the Mother of God enveloped me in her fiery warmth, and I stood there, the only survivor. The next morning, they pulled me out and took me to the commander, who no longer laughed, saying: "Did your God help you?" "Yes, I did, and I confess Him." "Pray for my daughter, she's very sick," the boss said. This man became a believer overnight. After this story, the elder would turn away and weep. "This is what a trial the Lord has sent us." Let us, my dears, be strengthened in faith, just like these people. Let us be sober, rejoice, and never forget Christ for a moment.
