How effective and united is the military alliance in the face of these new challenges? Has NATO miscalculated? The military alliance is under immense pressure. The conflict over natural gas reserves in the Mediterranean brought NATO partners Greece and Turkey to the brink of military confrontation in 2020. Previously, then-US President Donald Trump had already threatened to withdraw from the alliance, while French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron declared NATO "brain dead." NATO's internal problems could prove fatal for the alliance. Hardly any member state is willing to pay for defense; too many countries continue to rely on the military might of the USA when it comes down to it. But the withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan in 2021 shows that those days are over! Who still needs NATO? The Ukraine-Russia war marks a "turning point"—and also reveals how much the defense alliance had previously been neglected, especially in Germany. While the conflict is bringing the alliance closer together, sanctions are being enforced, and weapons are being supplied, it is also exposing strong dependencies. How united is the alliance really? In the midst of the Ukraine war, NATO announced a change in strategy: In light of China's growing influence, NATO is to become more active in the Asia-Pacific region. China's rise is shaking up seemingly secure power structures in the West. Is NATO repeating its mistakes with the new military power, China?
