"Akhual Segodnya" and @Azamat Omarov. The court has sanctioned his arrest for two months under Article 174 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan (inciting hatred). Azamat published weekly political reviews on Mondays in a harsh satirical format, mocking the country's top officials. Earlier this week, a new director was elected for the International Foundation for the Protection of Freedom of Speech "Adil Soz" – renowned Kazakhstani journalist Nazira Darimbet. And on Tuesday, the foundation issued a statement regarding Azamat Omarov: "There is currently no official information regarding Omarov's arrest; details are being investigated. The "Adil Soz" Foundation requests that law enforcement agencies and the prosecutor's office urgently provide information regarding Azamat Omarov's detention: his whereabouts, the crime he is suspected of committing, and the specific information and publications for which he was arrested. This information is of public importance and cannot harm the investigation, as the information has already been published, meaning it has been publicly disclosed and, in accordance with Article 201 of the Criminal Procedure Code, may be disclosed. According to lawyer Tolegen Shaikov, the court ruling issued against Omarov states that the satirical materials about the Kazakh authorities published by the journalist "could shape a negative public opinion." The lawyer reported that authorities detained the journalist at his home and confiscated him, along with his computer, telephones, and other equipment. According to Shaikov, Omarov denies the charges against him and considers the materials he published to be mere satire and humor. The lawyer has filed an appeal against the decision to arrest the journalist. The "Adil Soz" Foundation will monitor the situation regarding Azamat Omarov's arrest. On July 21, the Bostandyk District Criminal Court of Almaty continued the trial of Gulnara Bazhkenova, co-founder and former editor-in-chief of the publication Orda. The journalist is charged under three articles of the Criminal Code: Article 214 (Illegal Entrepreneurship). This relates to the purchase and sale of apartments. The case involves 10 apartments. Bazhkenova claims that taxes were paid on all transactions. Article 274 (Dissemination of Knowingly False Information). The case involves eight counts of publications.
