Everyday Grammar TV: Alien Life, Part 1

JR: Hi, Dr. Jill, What is that on your head? Dr. J: One of my neighbors reported seeing a spaceship over our neighborhood last night. You know, a UFO. JR: Oh, really? I know the government has been looking at strange things in the sky lately. Dr. J: Yes, they can’t see me when I wear this. JR: So you’re protecting yourself from aliens? Dr. J: Yes, my neighbor told me if I wear this hat, the aliens won’t be able to read my mind. Here, do you want one? JR: No thanks. Do you believe in aliens? Dr. J: Well, who else would be flying those UFOs? I guess you could say that I do believe in aliens. JR: Hey, that’s a good grammar topic for today. Dr. J: Right, we can ask someone about their belief like you did: (“Do you believe in aliens?”) JR: And you can emphasize your answer with the auxiliary verb “do” before the main verb. Dr. J: Like this: I DO believe in aliens! Come on, take the hat! JR: No, because I DON’T believe in aliens! Dr. J: Ok, you have the right to your beliefs. Let’s try another topic. Do you believe in fairies? JR: Hmm. Do you mean like Tinkerbelle? Of course I do. I believe in fairies. Dr. J: Let’s try a quiz. Make a question with “Do you believe in…” and ask a friend. JR: Here is one possible answer: “Do you believe in time travel? Dr. J: I certainly do! (disappears) JR: And that’s Everyday Grammar TV! --------- Learning English is Voice of America’s multimedia source of news and information for millions of English learners worldwide.
