Ted Simon interview: The Jupiter's Travels icon reunited with his bike
Get your tickets to the 2023 Adventure Bike Rider Festival at https://www.abrfestival.com Watch an interview with adventure biker and motorcycle travel author, Ted Simon, whose iconic book Jupiter's Travels has inspired generations of people to swing their leg over a motorbike to go forth and explore the world. James caught up with the Godfather of adventure biking at this year's Adventure Bike Rider Festival where we reunited Ted Simon with the Triumph Tiger that took him around the world in '70s. The bike can usually be found at the Coventry Transport Museum so it was a thrill to see Ted sat astride it once again. Ted Simon was in his 40s when he decided to wave goodbye to England and set off on a motorcycle journey around the world that would go on to define the rest of his life, and lead to him penning Jupiter's Travels. Despite achieving living legend status among the motorcycle travel community, Ted reveals he didn't actually have a motorcycle licence, let alone own a bike, when he decided to embark on his global adventure. He also tells the story of how the collapse of the British motorcycle industry meant he nearly didn't receive his Triumph Tiger which was almost the last bike to the leave the factory. In this interview with Ted Simon, the author also explains what motivated him to embark on a journey around the world at a time when motorcycle travel wasn't popular, and how it got arrested twice for being a spy within the first few weeks. He also reveals why you should 'let other people do the talking' on a motorcycle tour, and how being a lone rider at time when adventure riders weren't a common sight in the world, helped him to be accepted by the communities he rode through. Ted Simon also explains how spending four years travelling around the world couldn't help but change him as a person. Ted also talks about his latest book, Don't Boil the Canary, which is about his life before Jupiter's Travels. His inspiration for telling the story was to ensure his children and grandchildren have a record of his life before he first jumped onto a bike. You can meet the world's leading motorcycling authors, travellers, and social media stars at the 2023 Adventure Bike Rider.
