Russia remains the Nordics' biggest security concern | Teivo Teivainen

China's top diplomat is continuing his tour of the Nordic countries at a time of growing security concerns across Northern Europe. “China is trying to prevent the Nordic countries from moving even closer to the U.S. approach toward Beijing,” says Teivo Teivainen, Professor of World Politics at the University of Helsinki, in World Talks. According to him, the timing of the visit is no coincidence. “China is deliberately trying to strengthen its position right now,” he adds, pointing to the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara. Tensions in the region have also been rising following Russia's decision to close several railway border crossings with Finland and the Baltic states. At the same time, the Arctic is becoming increasingly important. According to Teivainen, melting ice is opening new trade routes and providing access to valuable natural resources, attracting growing interest from both China and NATO countries.
