Why Ferrari's Fake Manual Transmission is GREAT NEWS for Car Guys!
In this video I discuss Ferrari's new manual transmission for the 12 Cilindri. It's not a typical manual transmission. It's electronic and sends signals to the DCT to shift. Definitely different than the old school manual transmissions. However, there is a bright spot to this. Since the car has an automatic Drive Mode, Ferrari was able to install this system without additional costly EPA testing that they would normally need to do in order to certify a new transmission. This means that automakers can adopt this system to any car with a DCT transmission already installed. Yes it's not as good as the old school analog systems, but it's not bad either. I talk about car clutch systems from the 80s and 90s and how they developed over the decades. My point is that by 2015 or so, you had clutch delay valves, rev matching, rev hang, etc. so the system felt more like a video game already by then. This new Ferrari system feels like those cars.
