She was agitated from the start and clearly afraid of my judgment. After telling me her story, she said: She and Phil have been married for over 20 years, both appreciating their spouses—but without a real emotional and physical connection for a long time. Then she looked directly at me and said, "If we love each other so much, it must mean something." I understand this sentiment perfectly, because that's often how it feels: Finally, someone understands me. Finally, there's closeness, desire, and lightness again. Finally, life doesn't just feel like going through the motions anymore. And yes, it does mean something. But it doesn't yet determine whether it will lead to a future. Because it can be very real, and yet also an escape from something that hasn't been addressed in your marriage for a long time. That's why I asked Celina: Are you in love with this person, or are you in love with the feeling of being alive again through them? Many people cling to precisely this: the intensity of their feelings. But that's not the answer. What's crucial isn't just how strong something feels, but what two people do with it.
