Audiolibro - El coronel no tiene quien le escriba - Gabriel García Márquez

Gabriel García Márquez (Aracataca, Colombia, 1928) is the most representative figure of what has come to be called Hispanic American "magical realism". Even before writing One Hundred Years of Solitude (a novel already published by El Mundo in the Millennium I collection, where he recreates the imaginary geography of Macondo, a place isolated from the world where reality and myth merge), he was already the author of a group of works directly related to this narrative. Other memorable works include: No One Writes to the Colonel, The Autumn of the Patriarch, Chronicle of a Death Foretold (volume number 5 of this collection), Love in the Time of Cholera, and several collections of masterful short stories. In 1982 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature. While the works preceding One Hundred Years of Solitude are sometimes considered an approach or attempt at the great novel that was to come, critics increasingly emphasize the intrinsic value of these early, though not debut, titles by García Márquez, above and beyond the elements that connect them to his great novel. Such is the case of No One Writes to the Colonel, the second of his books. “It would be a mistake to dismiss them as failed attempts; particularly. No One Writes to the Colonel is a small masterpiece of García Márquez’s condensed style” (José Miguel Oviedo). However, given the power of the author’s Macondo world, it is difficult to avoid pointing out similarities and differences between the two titles. In No One Writes to the Colonel, there is already a seed of excess, specifically regarding time (the protagonist’s long wait for his ever-delayed pension); there is, of course, the theme of loneliness; the repetition of certain elements, the wars as a backdrop, the symbolism of some objects (or animals: the rooster, which is the inheritance of the dead son). The language, however, is sober, restrained, and the narrative almost linear, although the peculiar sense of rhythm, the protagonist’s endless comings and goings, which provoke a certain obsession in the reader, is fundamental and gives character to this novel, which has recently been adapted into a film, and A successful adaptation by Mexican director Arturo Ripstein, starring Spanish actress Marisa Paredes as the colonel's patient wife.
