All this led to the fact that the Spaniards assembled the famous Invincible Spanish Armada with the aim of invading England. However, the Armada became famous only because the English triumphantly defeated it. The Netherlands also participated in this war, which had long been waging a war for independence against the rule of the Spanish Habsburgs. By helping another Protestant country, England tried to weaken the influence of Catholic Spain in Europe.
