Primitive Fish and Palm Fruit Soup: Catch, Gather & Cook
A yucca string hand line was cast into the surf to catch small fish that were then dried in the sun. A cluster of fruit from the Mexican blue palm (Brahea armata) were picked too early. The tasteless pulp around the seed is tasteless and astringent when picked too early. The seeds are hard as stone but I've read that they were eaten in the past. I'm not yet sure how to prepare them. But I learned that the fruits can be hung in the hut for a few weeks to finish maturing and then they are edible although not delicious. I am saving the seeds to continue experimenting. I barely produced a small ember with the hand drill due to a big blister on my hand. After getting the fire going I decided to make a pipe to blow air into the fire more efficiently. I used giant cane and simply had to puncture through the closed segments with my spindle. Then I gathered water from a small pool I dug in the creek. This water filters through sediment, gravel and sand before surfacing. I have consumed this water many times. I poured water into the pot along with a dried fish and some palm fruit. The pot of soup cooked on the hot coals for about an hour then I enjoyed the protein-rich meal. The broth tasted wonderful. The fish was rather bony and the palm fruit was unspectacular but still provided some nourishment. What should I cook next? Join the Tribe!
