Disabled and Non-Disabled Dancers Unite: Explore Physically Integrated Dance | Art Loft

Enter the rehearsal room with dance company, Karen Peterson and Dancers (KPD). The company is dedicated to advancing physically integrated dance, which brings together dancers with and without disabilities. Founder Karen Peterson began the company in the 1990s, and remains its artistic director. Hear about their innovative blend of improv and experimentation behind some of the contemporary choreography. Follow along as company dancers prepare for the annual Forward Motion Dance Festival and Conference. Hosted by KPD, this conference brings together physically integrated dance companies from around the world for community engagement and performances. Hear from dancers, Nareika Rose Masla, Adam Eckstat, Sun Young Park, and Marjorie Burnett as they reflect on their experiences with KPD. Through dancing together, they have found freedom and beauty. Guest choreographer, Mark Travis Rivera, has a unique approach to dance. As a self-described “professional storyteller” Mark’s choreography draws on emotion and telling human-centered stories through movement. Also a disabled choreographer, Mark sees physically integrated dance as a way to honor and celebrate the contributions of artists with disabilities.
