In 2018, a severe malnutrition crisis struck Asmat Regency in South Papua, claiming the lives of approximately 72 children between September 2017 and January 31st, 2018. The challenging geography of Asmat, surrounded by rivers and swamps, significantly hampers the distribution of nutritious food, making it extremely expensive and limited, ultimately out of reach for most locals. This issue is further exacerbated by a shift in consumption habits, with the Asmat people increasingly relying on rice and instant food instead of local food like sago and sweet potatoes.
