Grand Rounds- Spermatogenesis and Male Fertility

Orwig, Ph.D., Magee-Womens Reasearch Institute, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology has developed guidelines for learning for the subspecialty of reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI). These guidelines specify that training should include information that provides the fellow with the ability to be familiar with the male partner and diagnose sub-fertility and absolute infertility and evaluate and discuss patients with these problems. This internet activity is designed to provide such training to reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellows as well as other practitioners of reproductive medicine. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of the educational activity, participants should be able to: With respect to male fertility: 1. Explain spermatogenic lineage development 2. Review the anatomy of the testis 3. Explain the role of gonadotropins and testicular somatic cells in the regulation of spermatogenesis 4. Recognize normal semen parameters in the fertile male With respect to male infertility: 1. State the prevalence and diagnoses for male infertility 2. Discuss the causes of infertility 3.
