The Madlanga Commission was expected to hear explosive testimony from two of its most anticipated witnesses—businessman Suleiman Carrim and alleged crime figure Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala. Instead, both testimonies were postponed after dramatic legal arguments that dominated proceedings. In Carrim's case, evidence leader Matthew Chaskalson revealed that the commission had received independent whistleblower reports alleging Carrim had been seen shopping at a Cape Town shopping centre, having lunch at a restaurant and attending public engagements despite his lawyers maintaining that he was medically unable to testify.
