SPIRITISM The term "Spiritism" is synonymous with Spiritist Doctrine; however, it is frequently used erroneously to designate any practice of mediumship (communication with Spirits), or confused with Afro-Brazilian cults (Umbanda, Candomblé, among others). Spiritism is a doctrine that deals with the nature, origin, and destiny of Spirits and their relationships with material life. It has three facets: philosophy, science, and religion (morality). The followers of the Spiritist Doctrine are called Spiritists, and their practices are based on the study of the basic works of the Codification and on material and spiritual assistance to those in need. When Did It Emerge? It was revealed by Superior Spirits and codified (organized) in 1857 by a French professor known as Allan Kardec. Therefore, it originated in France more than a century ago. Why study it? In John 8:32, Jesus said: "And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." To be truly Spiritist – because it is impossible to understand and live such a complex and comprehensive Doctrine without mastering its basic knowledge.
