Endocrinology | Hypothalamus: Posterior Pituitary Connection
Official Ninja Nerd Website: https://ninjanerd.org Ninja Nerds! In this endocrine physiology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy explores the connection between the hypothalamus and the posterior pituitary gland. This session highlights the neuroendocrine relationship that underlies the release of key peptide hormones and explains how this connection plays a vital role in maintaining fluid balance, blood pressure, and reproductive function. We begin by reviewing the anatomical and functional continuity between the hypothalamic nuclei—particularly the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei—and the posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis). You’ll learn how hormones like antidiuretic hormone (ADH/vasopressin) and oxytocin are synthesized in the hypothalamus, transported down axons via the hypothalamo-hypophyseal tract, and released directly into systemic circulation. The lecture also emphasizes the stimuli for release, feedback mechanisms, and physiologic effects of ADH and oxytocin, including their roles in water reabsorption via V2 receptors, vascular tone through V1 receptors, and uterine contraction and lactation reflexes mediated by oxytocin.
