Vita Cola for 35 pfennigs—today the market leader in Thuringia, ahead of Coca-Cola. Bautz'ner mustard for 37 pfennigs—today 24 million jars sold annually, representing a 23 percent market share in Germany. Beer for 48 pfennigs—Radeberger was a scarce commodity even in Radeberg itself. And the most expensive item: Rondo coffee for 8.75 marks, 125 grams. What this became in 1977 was Erich Honecker's crowning achievement—51 percent roasted coffee, the rest peas and grain, a Politburo decision that transformed Vietnam into the world's second-largest coffee exporter.
