The incident occurred in the village of Deir Siryan, Nabatieh Governorate. According to the Israeli military, the clash took place around 2:00 a.m. local time. At the time, Golani Brigade troops were conducting a military operation in the area. Israel said a Hezbollah fighter suddenly opened fire on the troops. A firefight ensued. Captain David Hazut, the Golani Brigade platoon commander, was reportedly killed in the incident. Another Israeli soldier was injured. Israeli media reports said the troops returned fire. However, the initial attack reportedly failed to hit the target. The Israeli military then pounded the location with artillery. The operation resumed several hours later. Published aerial footage shows three Merkava tanks and one military vehicle surrounding a house. Israel suspects the house was a hiding place for Hezbollah fighters. According to Israel's version, the fighters then emerged from the building and moved toward a farmland. Israeli armored vehicles reportedly immediately opened fire. Shortly afterward, one of the Merkava tanks fired a projectile at the target. Other tanks then joined the pursuit. Israel claims the Hezbollah fighter was ultimately killed in the operation. The Israeli military also stated that Captain David Hazut was the first soldier killed since the signing of the framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon. The agreement had only been signed a few days earlier. Israeli military data records at least 37 soldiers and officers killed since the conflict with Hezbollah resumed in early March.
