Caterina de' Medici: la Regina Nera

#caterinademedici #history #historicalcuriosities In this video, I'll tell you about the life of Catherine de' Medici, the so-called "Black Queen," who arrived in France from Florence in 1533, marrying the Dauphin Henry II of Valois, son of King Francis I of France. Catherine was frowned upon because of her origins. Henry was a royal, while she descended from the Medici family, which, while powerful, consisted of bankers and merchants. Despite this, she stood out, admired for her vast culture and possessing countless books. Moreover, thanks to her, important innovations were brought to France: tablecloths and forks began to be used at the table, underwear and high heels began to be worn, she designed the first corset, and launched the fashion for perfume. Her years in France were marked by the clashes between Catholics and Huguenots that gave rise to the French Wars of Religion. Although Catherine spent her life trying to achieve peace, her policies of religious tolerance did not have the desired effect. The St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, for which she was partly accused, consolidated the black legend surrounding her. Even today, centuries later, her most widespread image remains negative. ------------------------------- If you want to stay updated on the channel's activities or other historical curiosities, you can also find me on: Instagram:   / scioglierei.  .
