The Village of Twechar, Central Scotland
There are very few things easier on the eye than frosty rural views. This short film was taken in December 2022 just before the ground started to thaw. Twechar is in more or less the exact centre of Central Scotland with the river Clyde to the west and the River Forth to the east. It sits on the border of East dunbartonshire and its neighbouring district of North Lanarkshire. Twechar is a small village with an active community spirit centred round the excellent healthy living centre based near the top of the village. The village, like most small communities in the Central Scotland area has an industrial past with Coal mining being the previous life of this place. Nowadays, the village has some small industry in the field of food manufacture and other smaller bespoke type industry. It is served by public transport with a regular bus service taking residents and visitors to both Kirkintilloch to the west of the village and Kilsyth to the East. There is also a bus providing a rail link to the station of the nearby village of Croy in N.Lanarkshire. The Forth and Clyde canal runs through twechar and the towpath makes the ideal cycle route directly to Glasgow to the West and the Falkirk wheel to the East. The village also has evidence of Iron age existence on Bar hill, with the remains of an iron age camp being marked at the top of the hill. Also there are remains of a Roman bath house and a temporary Roman camp in the centre of the village that can on occasion be seen from above however, im yet to see it despite it being well documented. Ditches present from the building of the Antonine wall run to the east of the village as this was the North Western frontier of the Roman empire running from Clyde to Forth.
