Air/Acetylene Turbo Torch Perfect Temp for domestic refrigerator brazing! STOP using Oxy-Acetylene! It's amazing how many people are using the WRONG torch to braze tubing on refrigerator sealed systems these days! Part of the problem is HVAC school training is not the right training to learn how to work on domestic refrigerators...they aren't Air Conditioners, and YES, there is a huge difference! I had a guy try to tell me he learned in HVAC school and uses oxy-acetylene and also told me that he doesn't flow nitrogen, he evacuates the system, and that's all that is necessary! WRONG ...and RIGHT, all at the same time, but I need to explain: He's WRONG, very wrong, because by using oxy-acetylene, he's extremely over-heating the tubing and just like the outside of the tubing that turns black and gets all covered with carbon after putting 3000-6000 degrees of flame on the capillary tube, 1/4" discharge line, and 5/16"-3/8" suction line, you can bet the inside of the tube is just as covered with carbon buildup from the extreme heat of over-heating from the oxy-acetylene torch, when the temp that the flux and solder flow is way down at 1500-1600 degrees, 1500 to 2000 degrees lower than what he's heating the tubing to! The tip temp on oxy-acetylene is 4700 degrees! The flux is destroyed at over 1600 degrees and no good anymore, so why even put it on!? I hear some techs say, "I don't need flux with oxy-acetylene, the heat cleans the joint! BullS! The heat causes carbon buildup, which is not a clean joint! So, using oxy-acetylene, YOU DEFINITELY HAVE TO FLOW NITROGEN! He's RIGHT, because if you use the proper torch, you don't have to flow nitrogen, you can just evacuate the system, which I have been doing successfully with no problems ever, for over 40 years! Too much heat also brittle-izes tubing, as well as changes the chemistry of the tubing, and discolors it permanently, heat stain! I've seen tubing crack after being heated this much on refrigerators, 3 million of them that Whirlpool caused back 40 years ago and I was part of a rework team that had to go out and it took 14-18+ hours to repair them, because the cracks happened on the low side tubing and when the customer bought it brand new and they delivered it and plugged it in, and it ran for 24 hrs or more, until the customer called and said, HEY, it's not cooling and we finally got out there, the system had "burnout" really bad! We had to clean the burnout system with R11 and replace all the sealed system components in the home, and the customers were livid they wouldn't do a product exchange for their inconvenience! R11 is no longer available, but the repairs were a nightmare! This is what oxy-acetylene does to a refrigerator system! STOP USING IT! Start using the proper torch for the proper job! Yes, oxy-acetylene is for larger tubing, which is what it's all about, size of tubing, because larger tubing take much more heat to get to brazing temp to flow solder, than the tiny tubing of refrigerators! Plus, you light a turbo torch, air/acetylene & it's lit, no adjusting anything! Not the same with Oxy-acetylene, I don't have to tell you ... It's ridiculous what you go through IN THE CUSTOMER'S HOME, causing soot on the ceiling, loud popping trying to get it adjusted properly, on and on and on, plus dragging that whole cumbersome setup into their house, are you kidding me?? It's like big boys think they are validated with bigger toys...unbelievable & stupid! USE THE PROPER TORCH, and all of that nonsense goes away, as well up to 2 hrs or more is cut off every job too! I can carry a mc tank of acetylene under my arm, with the turbo torch around the regulator and a tool box in each hand, and I have everything in one trip, not multiple trips, dragging heavy cart across the customer's floor...once again, SMH! If you want to damage a customer's floor, take 2 hrs/more longer on every job, brttle-ize tubing, cause excessive carbon inside the tubing, and look like a fool that doesn't know what he's doing, go for it...continue to use oxy-acetylene, THE WRONG TORCH, instead of using COMMON SENSE AND EDUCATED KNOWLEDGE & USE AIR/ACETYLENE/ A TURBO TORCH SETUP, and do the job properly, do more jobs a day, make more money, with more professional repairs, THE PROPER WAY! Watch the video - have an open mind! Every person that uses air/acetylene says, OMG, it's so smooth & easy, I'm never going back to oxy again! No kidding! Try it! The other HUGE advantage is it's MUCH CHEAPER TO USE, because you don't have expensive oxygen or nitrogen to buy and lug around, only a mc tank that is about $40! I don't know about you, but money is profit and you are throwing profits down the drain using the WRONG torch!
