One of these tribes has built its entire culture around dragons: they ride them, hunt with them, fight with them, and form lifelong bonds with them. Originally, this tribe stole dragon eggs from the great dragon canyon to create their first riders. Over generations, they learned to breed dragons themselves and now only rarely return to the canyon to steal eggs when new bloodlines are needed. Every rider raises their dragon from the moment it hatches, forging an unbreakable bond that lasts a lifetime. Only the strongest warriors are allowed to become riders, after years of training and a blood-marking ritual that binds rider and dragon together. The girl is taken in by this tribe and begins training, hoping to one day earn a dragon of her own. But everything changes during a violent thunderstorm. Separated from the tribe during a hunt, she falls into a hidden tunnel that leads to the bottom of a canyon. There, she discovers the body of a slain lightning dragon — and beside it, her wounded hatchling, mourning his dead mother. Lost, starving, and terrified, the young dragon has no one left. Instead of fear, the girl chooses compassion. She saves the hatchling and brings him back with her when the tribe finds her after the storm. The tribe's shaman declares the meeting an act of destiny, allowing her to raise the lightning dragon despite not yet completing her training. She finishes her trials while caring for him, and together they grow stronger. She names him Vaeltharion. Now fully grown, Vaeltharion is loyal to her alone. He accepts no other rider and never forgets that she was the one who saved him when the world had taken everything else away.
