ISKCON Files: The Bloodless Coup | 1977-78: The Covert Consolidation of Power | Ch-2-Ep-2

ISKCON Files, an in-depth series uncovering the lesser-known history of ISKCON and the struggles and challenges faced by Vishwaguru Srila Prabhupada, the Founder-Acharya of ISKCON, from some of his own trusted leaders. His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the Founder-Acharya of ISKCON, began the movement in 1966. At the age of seventy, he journeyed to the West aboard a cargo ship, enduring two heart attacks during the voyage. ISKCON was thus founded through immense personal sacrifice and with the support of sincere seekers who were earnestly searching for the meaning of life. However, the journey was not without challenges. As the movement grew, certain disciples of Srila Prabhupada were entrusted with positions of responsibility to help carry the mission forward. Over time, material ambitions began to surface, and Srila Prabhupada faced serious difficulties—sometimes even from within his own leadership. In the final months before his physical departure, Srila Prabhupada expressed his desire that his disciples worldwide come to Vrindavan and be with him during his last days. Yet this message was not widely communicated across the worldwide ISKCON community. HG Ameyatma Prabhu explains in detail how access to Srila Prabhupada became increasingly restricted, resulting in many devotees being unable to be present — a situation that reportedly caused Srila Prabhupada great distress. At the same time, discussions were taking place among certain senior disciples regarding the future leadership of ISKCON. Even before Srila Prabhupada had physically departed, conversations had begun about initiation responsibilities and how the movement would function moving forward. The July 9th directive had named eleven representatives to initiate on his behalf, but the understanding of that role would soon become a matter of interpretation and debate. In the months that followed, these eleven ritvik representatives gradually emerged in the minds of many devotees as future initiating gurus and acharyas. Observers later reflected that this period involved not only organizational planning, but also a subtle shaping of perception within the community regarding spiritual authority and succession — developments that would significantly impact ISKCON’s future. For nearly a decade, from 1967 to 1977, Srila Prabhupada had consistently resisted proposals that his disciples assume the role of initiating gurus in his presence. Yet after his physical departure, the leadership structure shifted decisively. Those who had served as representatives on his behalf now stood at the top of the organization, consolidating authority and marking one of the most consequential transitions in ISKCON’s history.
