Independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon met with reporters at the National Assembly Members' Office Building today (the 8th) and argued that Defense Minister Ahn Kyu-baek needs to clarify the allegations of "desertion." Previously, on the 1st, the Public Interest Reporting Center for a Clean Society filed a complaint with the police against Minister Ahn on charges of violating the Act on Testimony and Appraisal in the National Assembly. The Center raised suspicions that while the mandatory service period for short-term soldiers was 14 months, Minister Ahn's service period was recorded as approximately 22 months. When the allegations arose during the National Assembly confirmation hearing, Minister Ahn stated that "the desertion is not true." He explained that although he was normally discharged from service and returned to university, he later became aware that the period of investigation by military investigative agencies was not included in his service period.
