For those planning a road trip to the Pamir Plateau in Tajikistan, we've put together a comprehensive roundtable discussion. #PamirPlateau #PamirHighway #PamirRoadTrip #CarWorldTravel #CentralAsiaTravel #TravelTheWorldByMyCar 1. About the Pamir Plateau and the Pamir Highway Pamir derives from the Persian word meaning "seat of the sun god." Nicknamed the "roof of the world," the Pamir Plateau boasts an average elevation of over 5,000 meters and receives only about 130 mm of annual rainfall. This cold, dry climate makes it uninhabitable, resulting in a very low population density. The Pamir Plateau is bordered by the Tian Shan Mountains to the northwest, the Hindu Kush Mountains to the southeast, the Taklamakan Desert to the west, the Kunlun Mountains to the southwest, and the Karakoram, Himalayas, and Tibetan Plateau below. It truly is the roof of the world, a plateau where the world's highest mountain ranges converge. The highest peak is Mount Ismail Somoni at 7,495 meters, making it the highest in the world outside the Himalayas. The second highest is Mount Lenin at 7,134 meters. The Pamir Plateau spans Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China. In a narrow sense, it refers to the Tajik side of these five countries, which encompasses most of the country. The Pamir Highway, a road that circles southward through the Pamir Plateau from Osh in eastern Kyrgyzstan to Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, is called the Pamir Highway and is approximately 1,350 kilometers long. This rugged and dangerous road, traversing a plateau over 4,000 meters in elevation, is characterized by unpaved terrain, cliffs, steep drop-offs, rockfalls, landslides, snow, and even paved roads with large holes due to poor maintenance, make it difficult to repair vehicles if they break down. The Pamir Highway, commonly referred to as the M41, was built in the mid-1800s by the British Crown and the Russian Empire, who were competing for control of Central Asia during the Great Game. It is said that the Soviet Union and later Russia further developed the route in the 1900s to facilitate their invasion of Afghanistan. The Silk Road was a trade route connecting the Chinese mainland with Central Asia, West Asia, and the Mediterranean world of Europe. It facilitated the exchange of cultural artifacts between the East and the West. It stretched from Chang'an, China, to Constantinople in the Eastern Roman Empire. The discovery of Western glassware in Silla-era artifacts excavated in Gyeongju revealed cultural exchanges as far back as Silla. While the Silk Road was developed around the 1st century AD and declined with the advent of sea trade routes during the Age of Exploration in the 15th to 17th centuries, it has maintained its legacy. The Silk Road has become a popular tourist destination, with numerous historical sites being discovered throughout Central Asia. People traveling to the Pamirs generally use three routes: the original Pamir Highway along the M41, the Batang Valley Road from Karakul Lake to Lushan, and the Wakhan Valley Road, which heads south along the Afghan border. The Batang Valley Road is the narrowest and most rugged road but offers the most scenic views. The Wakhan Valley Road is the next most rugged road but boasts numerous historical sites. The direct route from Murgab to Khorog along the M41 is the least rugged but also offers less scenic beauty. We initially planned to take the Wakhan Valley Road, but due to concerns about the condition of our vehicle, we opted for the traditional Pamir Highway. Our impressions of the Pamir Highway can be summarized into five sections: 1) The 190km paved road from Osh to Saratash, which crosses the 3,600-meter-high Taldoq Pass, but the entire road is paved for easy travel. Saratash, a village at 3,100 meters, is ideal for acclimatizing to the altitude. 2) Saratash to Murgap, 230 km. This is a mostly unpaved, rough road. After crossing the Kyrgyz and Tajik borders on either side of the 4,282-meter Kyzylat Pass, you'll reach Karakul Lake, at 3,900 meters. It's a good place to spend an overnight stay. 3) Murgap to Khorog, 318 km. This mostly unpaved, rutted, and rough road took two days to complete. Beyond the middle, the Gunt River appears, revealing many villages and beautiful scenery. Khorog is the central city of the Pamir Plateau, making it a great place to relax. 4) Khorog to Qalaikum, 240 km. While the altitude is significantly lower, this route heads north along the Panji River, which borders Afghanistan. It's the most rugged section of the Pamir Highway. With numerous cliffs and construction sites, this is a challenging and arduous section that took three days to complete. 5) The 350km section from Kalaikum to Dushanbe involves crossing mountain passes, but the paved road makes for an easy drive. 2.
