Patients treated in intensive care may experience prolonged physical, cognitive, and mental impairments after treatment; this phenomenon is called post-intensive care syndrome. One cause of prolonged physical disability includes ICU-acquired weakness (ICU-AW). Rehabilitation and mobilization in the ICU are important to prevent ICU-AW. In these situations, neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), which involves the use of electrical currents and rehabilitation of patients' limbs, can be used as an alternative strategy for early rehabilitation.
