Climbing To Abune Yemata Guh: Ethiopia's Dangerous Church in The Sky

This Ethiopian vlog required a short flight 1 hour flight from the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, to Mekele, Tigray. The Tigray region has been the most volatile and dangerous area in Ethiopia due to the civil war that has taken place over the last 3 or so years. Nevertheless, the people of Tigray were the most warm, loving and hospitable people. We were supported, given safe passage and were able to complete the trip with no problem. From Mekele we took a 2 hour drive to Hawzen, a small town located in the Misraqawi (Eastern) Zone of the Tigray Region. After a day of rest in Hawzen we drove 10 minutes over to the main event, Gheralta Mountains. Gheralta is home to Abune Yemata Guh, also known as The church in the sky. Abune Yemata Guh sits 8,460 feet (2,580 meters) above ground. This approximately 1,500 year old church can only be reached by scaling the mountain with bare hands and feet (with no ropes or additional support). This is the definition of a real church in the sky! This rock hewn church is one of the major attractions of the entire country as it is tucked into a cliff that requires a climb that will question and threaten your very existence. Needless to say the trip was worth every second. **Trusted Ethiopian Tour Guide: https://www.facebook.com/share/hnWeeN...
