It is often said that the Passover feast celebrates the memory of the liberation of the Hebrews from their captivity in Egypt, assuming that the story in Exodus 12 commemorates a historical event through a ritual. However, our literary analysis suggests that this was not the case, but the other way around: the text constructs a founding myth to justify an already established ritual.
