The nasal cycle is the unconscious alternation[1][2] of partial congestion and decongestion of the nasal passages in humans and other animals. This results in a greater airflow through one nostril, with a periodic alternation between them. This is a physiological congestion of the nasal conchae, also called nasal turbines (coiled bony projections inside the nasal cavities), due to the selective activation of one half of the autonomic nervous system by the hypothalamus. It should not be confused with pathological nasal congestion. In modern Western literature, it was first described by the German physician Richard Kayser in 1895.[3] We are not accustomed to breathing so fully using both nostrils. At any given time, one nostril is more open and has the greater airflow. The cycle has an average period of 4 hours, but this is highly variable. It is present in 85% of humans and is likely to occur in all mammals. It can be affected by posture, allergies, and upper respiratory infections.
