And a series of very ordinary people who, in the space of hours, commit acts of humiliation and sexual violence against an innocent girl—just because a voice on the phone told them to. When you watch Compliance (2012, Craig Zobel), you think: impossible. Exaggerated. No one would do something like that. Then you discover it actually happened. Not once. Seventy times. In thirty-one American states. Over ten years. In this episode of Cine&Psi, I analyze the film through three of the fundamental pillars of social psychology: 🔹 The Milgram Experiment (1961) — 65% of ordinary people went so far as to administer potentially lethal electric shocks to a stranger, simply because an experimenter in a white coat told them to continue. Milgram was trying to understand how the Holocaust was possible. The answer he found was uncomfortable: there's no need to be a monster. Just obey authority. 🔹 Diffusion of Responsibility (Darley & Latané, 1968) — When more people are involved, each feels less of the moral burden of the action. The manager delegates to the voice. The boyfriend delegates to the manager. The girlfriend obeys because everyone else obeys. No one feels responsible—and everyone is. 🔹 The Swiss Cheese Model (James Reason) — Systemic crimes don't happen because of a single mistake. They happen when multiple flaws line up. McDonald's knew these incidents were happening for years. It didn't train its employees. It didn't create procedures. Paying the victims was more cost-effective than preventing them.
