An example of this is realizing that a word can begin (alliteration) or end (rhyme) with the same sound as another word. It is also necessary to understand that letters represent the sounds of speech, therefore it is not enough to simply teach the child the name of the letter; they need to understand that each letter represents a sound (some letters represent more than one sound).
