In the beginning, Buddhism, Hinduism and animism were thoroughly blended in the society of the region of what is now Thailand. But with the changing times, anything that wasn’t considered Buddhist was discriminated against and excluded from the mainstream belief system. Even then, there are many groups of people who continue to rely upon spirits and sacred beings in their search for peace of mind. These faithful followers invest significant levels of reverence in the world of the invisible, a world which consists of household and guardian spirits, ancestral spirits, the spirits of city pillars, and the spirits of their surrounding environment. Rites of prayers and offerings dedicated towards those who reside beyond this world help to interlink the living and the dead. But, apart from that, these ritualistic aspects also bring together the living and the living in very impressive ways. In this episode of Spirit of Asia, we attend the Phi Mod ceremony of Phetchaburi, in which ancestral reverence becomes embodied in family relationships. Rites of offerings are dedicated towards categories of spirits assigned to the respective stage in one’s life. The Phi Mod is an exciting and colorful celebration of ghosts.
