MEMENTO MORI y CARPE DIEM: cómo vivir antes de que el tiempo pase

What do memento mori and carpe diem really mean? Far from being obscure, superficial, or motivational phrases, these two ideas can help us live in the present with more awareness, depth, and meaning. In this DentroLab video, we reflect on the fragility of life, the passage of time, and all that we keep putting off. Drawing on Martin Heidegger, Saint Augustine, Horace, and Psalm 90, we discover why remembering that our life has a limit doesn't have to paralyze us: it can awaken us. Memento mori means "remember that you will die," but it's not an invitation to fear or pessimism. It's a call to stop living on autopilot and start inhabiting our own lives. Carpe diem also doesn't mean living without thinking about the consequences or consuming every moment with desperation. The Latin verb carpere invites us to seize the day: to recognize what is ripe today, to cherish what matters, and not to always postpone life for a tomorrow we cannot control. In this video we'll talk about: — the true meaning of memento mori; — Heidegger and the human being as being-towards-death; — Saint Augustine, time, and the restless heart; — Horace and the profound meaning of carpe diem; — why routine can make the years seem to pass more quickly; — how the words “I can still” change our relationship with time; — Psalm 90: “Teach us to number our days”; — an exercise to discover what you're putting off and what truly deserves your time. Perhaps you don't need to do anything extraordinary. Perhaps you just need to make that call, have that conversation, sit down with someone, use that glass you were saving for a special occasion, or simply be truly present on an ordinary day. Because living in the present doesn't mean filling every minute. It means receiving it, acknowledging it, and giving it true form.
