Rolls-Royce | Dahlewitz apprentices take off

Designing an aircraft, manufacturing the parts for it, building a prototype, conducting test flights and then putting it into series production: what sounds like an aircraft manufacturer's development programme lasting years took only a few days in the training workshop in Dahlewitz. The designers and test pilots were 15 second- and third-year apprentices. A six-person team designed the model aircraft on the computer using a 3D CAD application based on initial hand-drawn sketches. The final design emerged following consultations with the whole group. "Designing the aircraft was particularly good fun for me because you have to think outside the box a bit," recalls Luise Dietze, casting her mind back to the initial stages of the project. The first test flights at the beginning of April were an unforgettable experience for the apprentices. They had already been practising their flying skills using the flight simulator.
