The idea for Slovakian Route 66 arose during the economic crisis of 2009. The goal was to bring a certain economic benefit to the region through its increased visibility. Thus, the originally 170 km long Route 66 became a 270 km long connection between Poland and Hungary. According to a 2019 report, this "Route 66" is even planned to be extended, stretching from the Baltic Sea coast to the Adriatic Sea. As early as the 19th century, it was known for its pristine waters, and it was therefore no surprise that its winter ice was transported as far as Vienna, Berlin, and Budapest. The lake has neither surface inflow nor outflow, and on average, it is still covered in ice for 155 days a year. The popular winter sports and spa resort of Štrbské Pleso, which shares the same name, developed around this natural gem. It's incredible how touristy this perhaps highest-altitude spa resort in Central Europe has become. No wonder, since the most beautiful mountain lake in the High Tatras is featured in every guidebook. The towering 2,655-meter-high Gerlsdorf Peak is not only the highest point in Slovakia, but also in the entire Carpathian Mountains. This small village in northern Slovakia was first documented in 1376. In 1977, the entire village was declared a protected historical site, and in 1993 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Even today, 20 residents live permanently in 6 of the 55 wooden houses. This village, preserved in its original state, is one of only a few in Europe where bears and wolves still roam freely. Malý Šturec 890 m a.s.l. The 1/14 road, renamed a state road in 2003, crosses the 890-meter-high Malý Šturec mountain pass in central Slovakia. The "Path of the Heroes of the Slovak National Uprising of 1944" also runs over the pass. This approximately 760-kilometer-long trail is almost entirely identical to the Slovakian section of the European long-distance hiking trail E8. The trail is marked throughout in red and takes an average of 3-4 weeks to complete. The pass is also traversed by the single-lane Čremošné Tunnel.
