AI in Ophthalmology: Transforming Eye Care | Dr. Vivek Explains | Shekar Eye Hospital
In this video, Dr. Vivek, a vitreoretinal surgeon at Shekar Eye Hospital, discusses the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Ophthalmology. AI has become a buzzword today, with vast applications across various industries. It has seamlessly integrated into many aspects of our lives—so why should ophthalmology be any different? AI has shown great promise in managing several eye diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, corneal disorders, pterygium, and cataracts. It aids in early diagnosis, accelerates decision-making, and assists in formulating treatment plans. Since AI relies heavily on imaging, its integration into ophthalmology is both feasible and beneficial, paving the way for a promising future. However, despite these advancements, AI in ophthalmology is not yet at its peak. A major challenge lies in the current research landscape—most studies have been conducted at single centres using a single machine, ensuring uniform data and easier comparisons. But in real-world scenarios, variations in imaging quality across different devices and centres make AI-driven comparisons more challenging. Another limitation is that AI performance drops significantly when image quality is poor. Experienced doctors, however, can still make accurate diagnoses even with suboptimal images. For instance, a doctor’s diagnostic accuracy (measured as the area under the curve) can improve from 0.5–0.6 to 0.8–0.9, even with lower-quality images—something AI struggles to replicate. Additionally, concerns regarding data privacy and security when using patient images remain a key challenge. While AI’s role in managing eye diseases is still evolving, its progress in the past 3–5 years has been remarkable. With the rapid pace of technological advancements, AI is set to play a major role in ophthalmic care in the near future. We hope this information was useful!
