Bulla Karatasi: The Forgotten Massacre
Bulla Karatasi: The Forgotten Massacre, produced by ICTJ and Kenyan media house Africa Uncensored, is the first comprehensive attempt to document the Bulla Karatasi massacre that took place in the northern region of Garissa, Kenya in November 1980. The film includes testimony of Somali-Kenyan victims and other citizens who experienced or bore witness to the brutal and indiscriminate attack on Garissa residents by Kenyan security forces. The extreme, targeted violence resulted in a state of emergency and over 3,000 lost lives. The film explores the ongoing impact of collective punishment, ethnic marginalization, and a lack of acknowledgment and reparation for communities in the North.
