The UK singer-producer has created an intriguing musical world by addressing life’s travails. She makes it vivid by giving what are ostensibly dirges a fierce beat and pop sheen inspired by the goth/industrial heroes from her youth, such as Siouxsie and the Banshees and Nine Inch Nails. Darkness is an ally, and Winter uses it to craft a persona and make memorable tunes. “I just spoke to Cupid, he told me that we're far from Heaven/ I know that we're dying, it's not from lack of trying,” she sings in “Funeral.” The eerie soundscape exemplifies how aura can be just as potent as a hook. It also tilts towards a unique balance in Winter’s music: waxing melancholy doesn’t prevent you from dancing the night away. One critic said her track “The Other” has a “Giorgio Moroder-meets-Kate Bush shimmer.” Dead on. Winter took to classical piano as a kid because she was restricted by the brace she wore due to hip dysplasia. It was a long road of healing from there, with numerous hospital procedures that forced the use of wheelchairs and crutches through her mid-teens. Isolation is something she knows about. The singer spent the last decade honing her craft as well as honing an eloquence at what some call sadbangers. How eloquent? The Cure’s Robert Smith has called her “Sad Music” one of his favorite modern songs.
