In this video, we explore and explain Marugo Shrine in Maruhongo, Minamiboso City, Chiba Prefecture, using drone footage. The shrine boasts a beautiful atmosphere, featuring a pond known as the Sacred Pond and cedar trees. History of Marugo Shrine (from the Maruyama Town History) According to the "Marugo Shrine Reconstruction Promotion" document from 1863, the shrine was founded in 718 and was originally called Suwa Shrine. The Maru clan, a powerful clan in the region, has long been highly revered, and Maru Mototoshi constructed the shrine and donated a small amount of land during the Juei era (1182-1183). Subsequently, the Maru clan was defeated by Anzai Kageharu, a powerful clan from Katsuyama, and fell into decline. The Anzai clan was defeated by Satomi Yoshizane in 1445 and came under the protection of the Satomi clan. After the Satomi clan's demise, the shrine became a tenryo (territorial domain) of the shogunate, but gradually declined. In 1869 (Meiji 2), the shrine's name was changed from Suwa Shrine to Marugo Shrine. The main shrine building was destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, but was rebuilt in 1927.
