O juiz do caso Vladimir Herzog, 50 anos depois | Entrevista
Vladimir Herzog was murdered on the premises of the São Paulo Department of Internal Affairs (DOI-CODI) on October 25, 1975. The military regime released the story that the then-director of TV Cultura had hanged himself in a cell with the belt of his jumpsuit. The reaction from civil society was immediate. An ecumenical event in Herzog's honor at the Sé Cathedral drew thousands of protesters and received widespread international coverage. Three years later, young judge Márcio José de Moraes was placed in charge of judging the lawsuit filed by Herzog's family against the Brazilian state, still under the AI-5 (Institutional Injunction) regime. For over 30 years, Moraes refused interview requests to comment on the case. "I wanted the sentence to speak for me," he explained. On the eve of the 50th anniversary of Herzog's death, the retired judge met with reporter Mariana Serafini to share his story in detail in an interview with CartaCapital.
