This is the true and unbelievable story of Baba Sora, the most infamous mystical con artist in West African history. A Malian man born in a remote village called Dabia, who managed to steal over $242 million from the Islamic Bank of Dubai—without a single weapon. A jaw-dropping tale of sorcery, illusion, global finance, and African politics. In August 1995, a man named Foutanga Babani Sissoko, aka Baba Sora, walked into a Dubai bank. Polite, elegant, and persuasive, he claimed he could magically double money using djinns and sacred rituals. The bank’s director, Mohammed Ayoub, fell under his spell. That was the beginning of one of the biggest bank frauds in modern history. For more than a year, Baba Sora convinced Ayoub to transfer hundreds of millions of dirhams—183 international wire transfers to be exact—to accounts in London, New York, Geneva, the Bahamas, and Mali. His weapon? Psychological manipulation, orchestrated mysticism, and human greed. No hacking. No violence. Just the power of illusion. With the money, he launched Air Dabia, his own private airline, built a massive mosque, and showered griots, artists, and entire villages with cash. In Bamako, he became a symbol of wealth, generosity, and power. Some saw him as an African Robin Hood. Others as a manipulative sorcerer. But in 1998, U.S. authorities arrested him. Extradited from Switzerland to the United States, he was charged with money laundering, illegal military helicopter purchases, and international fraud. Still, he managed to secure release with a $20 million cash bail—an all-time record. In Miami, he gave away money in poor neighborhoods, paid legal fees for Black youth, and handed out envelopes in churches. Locals soon called him the “Robin Hood of Little Haiti.” In March 1999, he pled guilty in court without ever defending himself, and served only 43 days in prison for one of the biggest bank scams of the 20th century. Back in Mali, Baba Sora was welcomed as a hero. In 2002, he was elected Member of Parliament, granting him parliamentary immunity for 12 years. He lived the rest of his life in a haze of mystery, silence, and myth—until his death in 2021 in Bamako. The true origin of his fortune?
