The Dawn of Dialup: How the Hayes Smartmodem Started the Online Era (Dialup Stories Part 1)
Well, it all started when I wanted to make an episode about how to tinker with modems in the context of retro computers, and before I knew it, I’d fallen down a rabbit hole full of fascinating stories related to these obsolete communication devices. In the first episode, I give an introduction to their history and fire up the legendary Hayes Smartmodem 1200. For testing, I am using an IBM XT clone, MS-DOS 5.0, and the Telemate 2.11 terminal. I hope you enjoy watching. 00:00 - Intro 00:38 - The history of telephones 02:53 - First telephone modems 06:34 - Modems appear in homes 09:25 - Home computer revolution 10:18 - Hayes Smartmodem 15:37 - My home telephone exchange 18:06 - First call 19:63 - The handshake 22:27 - Escape sequence 24:55 - Outro
